April showers may bring May flowers, but for a mother of school-aged kids, a rainy day can mean a day stuck indoors with bored little ones. Thankfully, there are plenty of indoor activities you can do in your home, and crafting is a great way to spend hours being creative and having fun.
If you are looking for great crafts to do on your rainy days in, see below for some ideas on how to use everyday household items to make something ordinary extraordinary again, and have a great time doing it as well.
Make a cereal box guitar. Instruments are one of the easiest crafts to make, as they can be made from just about anything. If you have a drummer in the family that is prone to banging on your pots and pans, have them try something more melodic by cutting a hole in a cereal box, and wrapping rubber bands around the hold. A straw cut beneath the string helps to create sound, and a long thin box can be attached for a neck to complete the look. Either paint or decorate with stickers and start jamming away.
Repurpose old picture frames. There are hundreds of uses for picture frames that have nothing to do with holding photos. If you have some gold picture frames, round frames or oval picture frames that have lost their luster, try repurposing them into other things such as a key holder by attached screw hooks to the inside edges and decorating it, or a TV tray by adding a hard bottom to the frame, and painting it all to match the decor.
Make a homemade cable car for small dolls and stuffed animals. Cut out a square on each side of a small box that can be used as “windows,” and have your child decorate the car however they choose with paint or stickers. Then attach a cut straw with a piece of tape to the top of your car, and string it with some yarn. Hang your yarn from two long points (preferably on a downward slope) and have your child zip their animals back and forth for hours of fun.
Paint rocks found in the yard. Go out during a break in the rain, or before if you know it’s about to start, and collect as many medium, smooth rocks as you can find. Have your children paint them with craft paint in any design they want from swirls to ladybugs or even eyeballs. After they have dried, you can either keep them for decoration in your home or hide them throughout your city for others to enjoy.
Make a planter from an old soda bottle. If you have a two-liter bottle lying around, clean it out to make it a creative planter. Decorate the bottle with a funny face such as googly eyes, a clown nose or other unusual features made from construction paper, and plant a tall growing seed. As the seeds grow, so will your planters “hair,” making this craft a delight for weeks to come.
